*Egypt power generation hit a record 20.7TWh for July, latest data from the country’s central bank shows (see chart 1). This equates to an average of 27.8GW. Whilst in theory this is less than half the country’s 59.5GW of end-2020 installed capacity, only 34.4GW of this is in the form of modern combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants whilst the country has a further 3GW of modern renewables (solar and wind) capacity. The remainder consists of mostly ageing steam turbine and gas turbine plants as well as hydropower that has performed at way below capacity in recent years.
