Construction of Egypt’s 4.8GW El Dabaa nuclear power plant is progressing quickly, with the first 1.2GW unit due to begin commercial operations in the second half of 2028. On 9 July, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly was joined by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi at a ceremony to mark the installation of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for Unit 2, less than eight months after the same milestone was reached for the first reactor (MEES, 21 November 2025).

The power plant will consist of four 1.2GW VVER-1200 reactors, which are due to be commissioned sequentially over 2028-2030. Once operations begin, Egypt will join the UAE and Iran as the only Middle East states with nuclear power plants. (CONTINUED - 266 WORDS)
