Kuwait’s power sector has weathered an unprecedented summer, managing to avoid prolonged blackouts despite Iranian attacks on key power plants and gas output disruptions. Demand curtailment, electricity imports, fuel switching, and a domestic gas output recovery in July helped the country navigate peak summer demand.
Kuwaiti electricity minister Subaih al-Mukhaizeem said on 15 September that the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy (MEWRE) had overcome “exceptionally difficult circumstances.” Iranian attacks damaged generation units, fuel tanks and transmission lines, and the regional conflict disrupted maintenance programs, some of which were delayed until late August.
