The temporary closure of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline highlighted its critical importance for water provision along the Red Sea coast. Crude oil is dispatched from producing sites in the country’s east through the pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea. From there it is either supplied directly to desalination plants or refined to produce fuel oil for the plants.
