As Europe accelerates efforts to secure energy supplies, stabilize prices, and speed up its clean energy transition, France and Portugal are hoping to revive long-stalled power interconnection projects with Morocco. The North African country has the advantage of proximity but its main selling point is a natural endowment of wind and solar resources, which, combined with relatively modest domestic demand, means it has the potential to become a major supplier of low-carbon electricity.
Renewables accounted for 42.7% of installed capacity by the end of last year, and the government is targeting 52% by 2030 (MEES, 13 March). Total installed capacity of 4.6GW is relatively modest but reflects the country’s overall demand rather than lack of potential.
