On 21 June, an explosion rocked the Barzan gas facility at Qatar’s northern gas and industrial hub of Ras Laffan, one of the most serious industrial incidents to hit the country’s energy sector in recent years. A fire that broke out after the blast was extinguished by emergency response teams.
The Barzan gas plant is a two-train facility that processes 1.9bn cfd of raw gas from three offshore platforms connected to at least 30 wells to produce 1.4bn cfd of sales gas. Processed gas is delivered to domestic power and desalination plants as well as petrochemical facilities. It is operated by QatarEnergy (93%) with ExxonMobil holding a 7% stake in the facility.
