At the center of Bahrain’s energy sector lies the country’s eponymous Bahrain oilfield, which is the sole source of gas production in the country. Gas is often overlooked in favor of its more fungible cousin oil, but cheap gas underpins Bahrain’s sizeable industrial sector as well as feeding the country’s power plants.

This economic model is now facing challenges as declining reservoir pressure at the field has resulted in a noticeable output drop this year. Gas production averaged a record 2.60bn cfd last year, but is down 11% year-on-year over the first seven months of 2025 according to the latest Jodi statistics and is on course for its lowest full year figure since 2018.
