Abu Dhabi’s power sector has been transformed beyond all recognition in less than a decade. From relying almost entirely on gas in 2019, more than 40% of electricity was generated by nuclear, solar and wind last year, causing the power sector’s gas demand to drop to a 14-year low (see chart 1).
Abu Dhabi’s Ewec Eyes New Era Of Low-Cost, Low-Carbon Power
Gas is being displaced from Abu Dhabi power and water offtaker Ewec’s network, with the Barakah nuclear power plant leading the charge. Solar’s role to-date has been more modest, but this is now set to change as falling battery storage costs mean that solar coupled with BESS now the cheapest source of electricity.
