QatarEnergy has officially kicked off development of its historic North Field Expansion Project, with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani laying the foundation stone in a glitzy, albeit brief, ceremony in Ras Laffan. The event was attended by a Who’s Who of the energy world, with the CEOs of ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Shell, Eni and ConocoPhillips all present on 3 October alongside Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi.
Located an hours drive north of Doha, the sprawling Ras Laffan Industrial City is the heartbeat of Qatar’s 77mn t/y capacity LNG industry, and indeed of the nation’s economy. The $45bn two-phase expansion project – North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS) – is now well underway and will lift capacity to 126mn t/y by 2028 (MEES, 29 September). “This major expansion comes at a crucial time, as natural gas occupies a pivotal position in the energy mix in a world facing geopolitical turbulence and is in dire need of clean energy sources that are in line with the global environmental goals,” Mr Kaabi told delegates at the event.
