On the surface Morocco is a green energy giant, at least compared to its peers in the Mena region. Wind, solar and hydro power production hit a record high of 8.7TWh last year (see chart 1), up on 7.3TWh for 2020 and the previous record of 7.9TWh set in 2019. The record 2021 renewables figure represents a three-fold increase over the past decade and also equates to a fifth of total power generation.
Morocco’s Renewables Output Hits Record In 2021, But So Does Coal
Morocco is the Mena region’s poster child for renewables. But whilst solar and wind output hit records for 2022, so did coal which accounts for a whopping 69% of total generation. Rabat has plans to replace coal with gas with initial imports via Spain to start as soon as next month. But plans for direct imports, as well as new gas-fired power plants, remain a long way off.
