Abu Dhabi President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a law establishing the Emirates Water & Electricity Authority (Ewec), replacing the former authority Adwea that was merged within the Ministry of Energy earlier this year. Ewec will oversee the operations of the newly-formed Abu Dhabi Power Corporation, which will take over the operations of Abu Dhabi’s existing utility Adwec. Ewec’s formation will pave the way for the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (Fewa), which serves the northern emirates, to join the new Abu Dhabi authority in unifying power generation and water provision across Abu Dhabi and the smaller emirates of Ajman, Fujairah, Ras-al-Khaimah and Umm al-Quwain (see map, MEES, 30 November). Fewa regularly imports electricity and water from Abu Dhabi (MEES, 20 July).
