Morocco has awarded contracts for two coal-fired power plants, and also prequalified international consortia to bid for two solar power projects. The awards are part of state power firm Office National de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable’s (ONEE) program to raise total generating capacity to 14.5GW by 2020 from the current 6.38GW. ONEE estimates Morocco’s electricity demand growth at 6.5% a year.
On 12 August South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering reported to the Korea Stock Exchange that the Safi Energy Company independent power project (IPP) consortium awarded it a 1.97 trillion won ($1.75bn) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a 1.32GW coal-fired power plant near the city of Safi. The plant will burn pulverized coal and incorporate an ultra-supercritical boiler, two 660MW steam turbines and a flue gas desulfurization unit. Daewoo said construction will take 46 months.
