If the 12-day Israel–Iran war last June demonstrated anything, it was the extent to which Egypt and Israel’s gas relationship has evolved into an uneasy mutual dependence (MEES, 4 July 2025). The resumption of hostilities since 28 February has found Cairo far better prepared than last year, though a protracted conflict will put Egypt’s resilience to the test.
Israel immediately shut-in the key Leviathan and Karish gas fields upon launching airstrikes in Iran, halting gas exports to Egypt and Jordan (MEES, 6 March). Previously this would have left Egypt scrambling. But lessons have been learned and Cairo brought in multiple floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) last year to help meet its growing gas demand and provide security of supply (MEES, 16 May 2025).
