Egypt has set out plans to triple installed renewable energy capacity from 9.5GW currently to 30.7GW by the end of 2029. Details of the roadmap were presented to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly by Minister of Electricity & Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat earlier this month. Renewables growth is necessary to reduce the share of natural gas in electricity generation from 79% and ease Egypt’s reliance on LNG imports.
Renewable capacity stood at 8.54GW last year and is planned to reach 11.21GW by the end of 2026 (see chart). Existing facilities generated a record 35.19TWh last year, accounting for 14% of total power generation (MEES, 27 February). Under the roadmap, wind capacity would increase fivefold to 15GW, while solar would more than triple to 12.7GW, with hydropower stable at 2.98GW. (CONTINUED - 959 WORDS)
