Fighting is raging across multiple fronts in Yemen as Houthi forces seek to build on the momentum from last month’s rapid advances. Yemen’s internationally recognized government has mobilized its forces to stop further advances by the militia, and has prevented the group from seizing the strategic Kahboub mountains in the southwest (MEES, 18 September).
Government forces have so far been able to repel waves of Houthi attacks and prevent the Iran-backed group from seizing Yemen’s main oil and gas producing regions in Marib province. Coordinated airstrikes by Saudi Arabia, the government’s main backer, helped Yemeni troops hold off the more disciplined Houthi forces, but they have been unable to reverse the Houthis’ recent territorial advances.
