German power giant Siemens Energy is seeking to breathe new life into its roadmap to rehabilitate Iraq’s power sector that was signed in 2019 (MEES, 3 May 2019). Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch and Iraq’s Minister of Electricity Ziad Fadhel signed a fresh cooperation agreement on 13 January on the sidelines of Iraqi PM Mohammed al-Sudani’s visit to Berlin where he met his German counterpart Olaf Scholz.

Electricity provision is a major challenge for the Iraqi government, with widespread blackouts in the hot summer months when demand for energy-intensive air conditioning soars often sparking political unrest. (CONTINUED - 1182 WORDS)
