The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has the country’s largest non-associated gas fields, while federal Iraq suffers from severe gas shortages. The opportunities for trade are clear, but politics has consistently prevented any move to realizing them. The start of gas deliveries from Kurdistan’s Khor Mor gas field to the 620MW Taza power plant in Kirkuk province this week appeared to represent a major breakthrough, but the KRG swiftly condemned it, stating it “neither approved nor authorized this action.”
The 750mn cfd Khor Mor gas field is operated by Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum on behalf of the Pearl Petroleum consortium. In a 4 August joint press release, the two UAE companies stated that they had begun delivering 100mn cfd of gas to the power plant under a one-year sales contract signed with the federal electricity ministry in December.
