Will Algeria continue to export gas through Morocco to Spain and Portugal? The 11.5bcm/y Gaz-Maghreb Europe (GME) pipeline which has done exactly this for the past 25 years is a key part of Algeria’s export infrastructure. But the contract regulating these flows runs out in November this year, and crucially, Algeria and Morocco have yet to agree a renewal.

For Algeria GME has been a crucial conduit for its gas supplies to Europe, carrying some 80bcm to Spain between 2010 and 2020. Until 2018, GME was the top route for Algeria’s supplies to Spain, but for 2019 and 2020 it was overtaken by the smaller 8bcm/y Medgaz pipeline which links the two countries directly (see chart).
