Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity has awarded Saudi private energy developer Acwa Power a project to develop a 200MW solar photovoltaic plant at Kom Ombo in Upper (southern) Egypt, just across the Nile from the recently completed 1.475GW Benban Solar Park (MEES, 1 November).

At the signing of the power purchase agreement on 31 October, Minister of Electricity Muhammad Shaker said the project is part of government’s strategy to “upscale sustainable energy security by molding a balanced energy mix.” This mix now appears unlikely to include coal (see main story).
