Italian major Eni has made a second gas discovery offshore Egypt in as many months, this time in the shallow waters of the Nile Delta. Development will likely be fast-tracked via existing infrastructure. The discovery is an example of the steady, low-risk gains delivered by the near-field exploration strategy that has come to dominate Eni’s activity offshore Egypt.
The Nidoco N-2 well was drilled within the Abu Madi West development lease, around 3km offshore in just 10 meters of water using onshore-based directional drilling. This approach – increasingly deployed in Egypt’s shallow offshore – reduces costs and shortens development timelines by avoiding the need for offshore rigs while also enabling rapid tie-ins to nearby infrastructure.
