Iraq’s summer power crisis worsened this week after Turkey halted electricity exports to the country’s north. Officials from Nineva province told the local Shafaq News agency that flows through the 400kV Cizre-Kask line were stopped on 26 August due to unpaid dues.

Baghdad had been relying on Turkish power imports to help partially replace the loss of Iranian electricity supplies to its northern provinces. All four 1.2GW capacity interconnectors between Iran and Iraq have been offline since March, when the US blocked Iraq from making payments to Tehran for electricity supplies (MEES, 14 March).
