Stefano Venier, CEO of Italian state-led gas pipeline network operator Snam set out his firm’s 5-year strategy on 19 January. A key element is getting Italy’s gas network ‘hydrogen ready’, not just for Italy itself but ultimately to provide a “southern corridor” connecting North Africa with central and northern Europe.

Mr Venier says that Snam has submitted a request for EU Projects of Common Interest (PCI) funding for this “hydrogen backbone”. “And what made us confident to submit the PCI was the fact that we had a sizable interest from southern German companies, Austrian companies ready to invest in Northern Africa to get the hydrogen through that pipeline,” he adds.
