Plans for Tunisia and Algeria to supply Europe with 10GW of renewable energy via offshore cables by 2030 have received a boost from the EU as part of its energy diversification strategy.
Developed by Italian green energy start-up Zhero, Medlink envisages 10GW of solar and wind projects – alongside battery storage – in Tunisia and Algeria to export 28TWh of power annually (an implied average of 3.2GW) to Italy’s Tuscany and Liguria via two high-voltage offshore cables, covering up to 8% of Italy’s electricity needs (MEES, 28 June 2024).
