Electricity interconnectors have been all the rage in recent years, but taking the much-needed step from planning to construction has been slow. A case in point is the EuroAsia Interconnector, which hopes to link the electricity grids of Greece, Cyprus and Israel via subsea high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables.

The current focus is on connecting Cyprus with Crete, with Norway’s Nexans awarded a key €1.43bn ($1.6bn) turnkey contract for engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of a 525kV HVDC, in July (MEES, 21 July).
