A planned 500MW solar PV project spearheaded by TotalEnergies in Libya appeared to move closer to reality this week after the French major on 17 May signed a “preliminary agreement” with state power firm Gecol and the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya. This deal upgrades an MoU signed late last year in which Total also pledged to incorporate solar power into upstream facilities in Libya (MEES, 26 November 2021).

The project will be located around As Saddadah, some 100km southwest of the port city of Misrata. Libya’s political troubles remain a key obstacle to progress, however (MEES, 20 May). (CONTINUED - 293 WORDS)
