On the surface, it’s more of the same in war-torn Yemen: the Saudi-led military coalition continues to carry out airstrikes against Iran-affiliated Houthi rebels (MEES, 31 January); the rebels continue to launch cross-border missile attacks against Saudi targets; and the humanitarian situation deteriorates further.
On the political front, Saudi Arabia is still struggling to reconcile tensions between its main ally the internationally-recognized government exiled in Riyadh and the separatist Southern Transitional Council based in Aden – the latter being backed by the UAE for much of the conflict. Local and tribal rule pervades much of the country, and the frontline between the Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed forces changes little. (CONTINUED - 1366 WORDS)
