Saudi private energy developer Acwa Power on 8 March announced the signing of two power agreements with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy potentially worth up to $2.3bn: $1.2bn for a 1.5GW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant in Shirin city and an implementation agreement for 500MW-1GW of wind capacity worth $550mn-$1.1bn.

Acwa says its current power and desalination portfolio, mainly in Saudi Arabia but increasingly in other countries, has an investment value of over $45.5bn with gross generation and desalination capacity of 31GW and 5.3mn m3/d, respectively. Among recent developments Acwa has been appointed preferred bidder for Dubai’s 900MW MBR Solar Park phase 5 (MEES, 10 January), has connected Saudi Arabia’s 300MW Sakaka solar plant to the grid (MEES, 29 November 2019) and has won a contract for two 125MW solar projects in Ethiopia (MEES, 3 January).
