*Egypt’s power generation fell to 196.7TWh for the 2019-20 financial year (to 30 June), down 1% from the 2018-19 all-time high of 198.6TWh. This fall for the year as a whole came despite the first three quarters showing year-on-year gains. But for the last quarter of 2019-20 (ie Q2 2020) generation slumped under the impact of Covid-19. For Q2 generation of 47.2TWh was down 7% year-on-year.

*In fact the impact of Covid-19 was already making itself felt in March when generation of 14.4TWh was down 4% year-on-year, in contrast to year-on-year gains for both January and February. For April, generation fell further to 14.1TWh, with May and June also well down – the latter was the lowest June figure in five years, latest official figures indicate (see chart 1).
