The Borouge joint venture of Abu Dhabi state firm Adnoc and Austria’s Borealis has awarded contracts to France’s TechnipFMC, Italy’s Tecnimont and Australia’s WorleyParsons for the world’s largest mixed feed cracker and an aromatics plant to be built at the refining and petrochemicals hub at Ruwais, 240km west of Abu Dhabi city.

The cracker will be the fourth at the site, although the three existing crackers –with combined capacity to produce 3.6mn t/y of ethylene – all process ethane. Borouge says the new cracker will have capacity to produce 1.8mn t/y of ethylene, while the aromatics plant to be built as part of the same project will have 1.5mn t/y capacity.
