It emerges that Iraq had been supplying Syria with 40,000 b/d of crude oil from Kirkuk through a pipeline to Syrian refineries, a previously unknown bit of news that Iraq has not admitted to. A source involved in Iraqi midstream operations says the crude was being diverted from Baiji through the old pipeline that Saddam’s Iraq had put to use to bypass sanctions but that the flow had stopped after ISIS took over the border areas with Syria. The report appeared in the latest crisis situation report by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on 1 July. It says, citing anecdotal evidence, that the Iraqi crude was being supplied to the refineries of Banyas and Homs in Syria, which has been prevented from exporting its own crude or importing fuel by EU sanctions.
