In late September, Sudan and its neighbor to the south reached a series of then-historic agreements which were expected to set the wheels in motion for the resumption of both Southern Sudanese oil production and exports from Port Sudan in the North (MEES, 28 September).
In the weeks that followed no apparent progress was being made on this front though, as the two sides were unable to agree on how their respective armies should be redeployed away from the de facto border – a move both Juba and Khartoum had said was necessary before Southern oil exports could resume.
