Iraq is doubling down on plans to import LNG in an effort to alleviate a structural gas shortage. It finalized a five-year deal last year with US company Excelerate Energy for an FSRU and earlier this week signed a preliminary agreement with TotalEnergies to negotiate the lease of a second vessel.
A ‘cooperation protocol’ was signed on 14 September during Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to Paris. Electricity minister Ali Waheeb said the agreement will “pave the way for discussions and negotiations to supply liquefied gas by deploying a floating platform to Iraqi ports in Basra.” The agreement was signed by the ministry’s southern generation subsidiary.
