Bahrain is grappling with a widening gas shortfall that could have profound economic ramifications, given that the island kingdom has built up a sizeable industrial base that relies on cheap gas feedstock. Domestic output from the country’s sole oil and gas field the Awali field (sometimes called Bahrain) has been in decline through 2025, slumping to multi-year lows. Output during the first eight months of this year averaged 2.35bn cfd, the lowest level since 2018 and down 10% on the same period last year (see chart).
