A key refining complex sustained damage in the latest spate of attacks against assets in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. On 1 May, six Katyusha rockets targeted the complex near the semi-autonomous region’s capital Erbil which houses the 100,000 b/d Kalak refinery and the 60,000 b/d Nineveh refinery which are both operated by Kurdish firm Kar.

The attack set ablaze “one of the storage tanks” at the complex according to a 2 May tweet by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) media relations chief Lawk Ghafuri. He added that the rockets “originated in the town of Bartella” near Mosul. The CEO of the politically-connected Kurdish conglomerate Kar Group, Baz Karim, saw his sprawling Erbil villa attacked by a barrage of 12 Iranian ballistic missiles on 13 March (see map).
