Algeria, a key supplier of gas to Europe, saw its gas exports hit an 11-year high 55.2bcm for 2021 (see chart 1). This marks an incredible turnaround from 2020’s quarter century low of 38.2bcm (MEES, 19 February 2021).

Algeria’s gas exports made an incredible turnaround in 2021 on the back of a boost in output. Hydrocarbon export revenues leapt by 70% despite lower oil volumes. The higher gas volumes came despite a late-year halt in shipments via the larger of two pipelines to Spain. Given years of underinvestment can Algeria maintain the progress?
