Bahraini aluminum producer Alba has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to US conglomerate General Electric and Turkish contractor Gama for a 1.792GW combined cycle gas turbine power plant at its Askar complex on the kingdom’s east coast.
The plant will provide power for Alba’s Line 6 expansion project, which will have 540,000 tons/year output capacity and take the company’s smelting capacity to 1.5mn t/y. GE will provide three gas turbines, three steam turbines and three heat recovery steam generators for the plant.
MEES estimates that the plant will require 205mn cfd of gas fuel to run at full capacity. Alba already operates four power plants at the site, with combined capacity of 2.224GW. These are separate from the 4GW of grid-linked capacity overseen by Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority.
