Sonatrach Taps China For Algiers Refinery Revamp

Algeria’s state petroleum firm Sonatrach is continuing to push its rejuvenated refining plan. This week the company awarded an AD45bn ($408mn) contract to China Petroleum Engineering & Construction (CPECC) for a revamp of Algiers refinery.

Sonatrach says CPECC, an affiliate of China’s state upstream firm CNPC, is expected to complete the rehabilitation in 21 months after the project award is formally approved. The project will include a 35% expansion of the plant’s crude processing capacity, from 58,100 b/d to 78,500 b/d.

CNPC is already involved in the Algerian refining sector as operator of the 12,000 b/d Adrar plant in the country’s remote southwest (MEES, 7 May 2007). (CONTINUED - 551 WORDS)
