Kuwait announced on 12 May that it apprehended four individuals associated with Iran’s IRGC earlier this month. It said they had attempted to infiltrate Boubyan Island on board a fishing boat. The interior ministry said that those captured were two colonels, a captain, and a first lieutenant, and that two others managed to escape. A member of Kuwait’s armed forces was injured in an exchange of fire. Kuwait summoned Iran’s ambassador to deliver an official protest, and labeled the incident a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and a breach of international law.
Iran’s foreign ministry denied the accusations, claiming that the individuals were Iranian navy personnel on a routine patrol and had entered Kuwaiti waters by mistake due to a malfunction in their navigational systems.
