Libya’s oil and gas sector has faced renewed instability and politically motivated disruptions in recent weeks (MEES, 25 September), forcing temporary production curtailments. But while these disruptions have drawn considerable attention, another obstacle threatens the sector’s recovery and planned foreign investments.

Former Oil Minister Mohamed Aoun slammed what he called “unprecedented corruption and ignorance” in Libya’s oil sector, alleging that “billions of dollars” in oil revenues had been squandered or looted over the past 15 years.
