QatarEnergy on 16 September signed a construction contract with Korean firm Samsung C&T to build the 2GW Dukhan solar PV plant. Originally announced in September 2024 to come online by 2030 (MEES, 6 September 2024), QatarEnergy now says 1GW under the first phase will be online “towards the end of 2028” while full generation will be reached by mid-2029.

Doha has plans to reach 4GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 under its national renewable energy strategy (MEES, 1 November 2024). The 2GW plant will join the 800MW Al Kharsaah solar plant, online since late 2022, and 875MW from the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar plants which QatarEnergy commissioned earlier this year (MEES, 25 April).
