Abu Dhabi’s state-led utilities firm Taqa is expanding its global footprint through a $1.2bn acquisition of South Korean conglomerate GS Group’s Spanish water treatment and desalination arm; GS Inima. Taqa says that “with a presence in ten countries, including Spain, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, and Oman, the company provides Taqa with immediate access to high-growth markets across Europe, Latin America, and Asia, reinforcing its position as a leading international utility.” Taqa and GS Inima are already partnering at the under-development 70mn imperial gallons/day (MIGD) Shuweihat 4 reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant in Abu Dhabi, which is due online in 2Q 2026.
Taqa says the deal will add around 171 MIGD of desalination capacity to its existing 1,250 MIGD; a 14% increase. GS Inima is a specialist in RO technology, and Taqa aims for two-thirds of its desalination capacity to come from RO plants by 2030. (CONTINUED - 143 WORDS)
