Egyptian President Sisi secured a commitment from Qatar to invest $7.5bn in his cash-strapped country during his 14 April visit to Doha which signaled a further strengthening of ties between the two nations that has seen state firm QatarEnergy enter the Egyptian upstream amongst other multi-million dollar investments (MEES, 15 November 2024). President Sisi also visited Kuwait where he and Emir Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Sabah “discussed various aspects of joint cooperation in the economic, investment, trade, energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, culture, and tourism sectors,” according to a joint statement on 16 April.

Both Qatar and Kuwait still has some way to go to reach the level of investment committed by Egypt’s key Gulf allies, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. While Egypt and the UAE may be on different sides of the conflict in Sudan (MEES, 18 April) this hasn’t stopped Abu Dhabi from investing some $35bn to develop the Mediterranean resort of Ras el Hekma (MEES, 17 May 2024).
