The GCCIA this week signed contracts to expand the GCC-UAE electricity interconnection between Sila (UAE) and Salwa (Saudi Arabia), to increase transmission capacity. Contracts were also signed for the development of a direct 400 kV double-circuit transmission line linking Sila with the new Ibri station in Oman. Currently Oman is only connected to the GCCIA interconnector via the UAE’s grid.

Construction on the new components is set to begin this quarter, with full operations beginning in late 2027. The upgrades will allow Oman and the UAE to increase electricity exports through the GCCIA interconnector to Kuwait, with Iraq also set to begin imports next year (MEES, 21 November).
