Sales gas output from Iraq’s 400,000 b/d Halfaya field has increased by around 70mn cfd to 130mn cfd as Chinese operator PetroChina works to boost output further to 160mn cfd by the middle of the month. Halfaya gas is being supplied to two nearby power plants in Maysan province which have been generating 1GW of electricity this summer according to Missan Oil Company (MOC) CEO Hussain Luaibi – the 180MW capacity Kahlaa plant and the 840MW Maysan CCGT power plant.
MOC says that Halfaya raw gas output is currently 270mn cfd, implying that slightly more than 50% of this is being flared. Flaring should be eliminated once the 300mn cfd Gas Processing Project (GPP) is brought online, with PetroChina’s engineering arm CPECC preparing to begin commissioning work on the project. Given that the GPP will have considerable spare capacity it could theoretically handle volumes from other nearby fields such as CNOOC’s 300,000 b/d Missan cluster (Buzurgan, Abu Gharib and Fakka).
