Recent years have seen Australia and more recently the US shake up the supply side of global LNG markets, challenging and overtaking long-term kingpin Qatar. Australia overtook Qatar in 2020 and has held onto No. 1 spot for 2021 and 2022 (see chart 1), while the US would likely have overtaken both in 2022 had it not been for a June fire at the 15mn t/y Freeport export terminal (MEES, 17 June) which left the facility offline until February this year.
