Israel’s Ministry of Energy on 4 July announced plans for a 150km subsea power cable from Ashkelon in the south of the country, north to Haifa. The primary aim of the cable is to meet growing energy needs in the center and north of Israel.

“The cable will transmit electricity mainly generated from renewable energy in Israel’s south to areas of demand in cities in the center and the north,” the Ministry says. While most of Israel’s end-2022 4.2GW solar PV is concentrated in the south, recent efforts have been made to increase wind capacity in the country’s north and more specifically in the Golan Heights where it hopes capacity will reach 420MW next year (MEES, 16 June).
