Iran’s South Azadegan oil field bordering neighboring Iraq will fall short of its target of bringing capacity to 220,000 b/d by the end of the current Iranian year (20 March 2023). Abuzar Sharifi, CEO of state-owned Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) announced on 12 February that his firm has been able to add 45,000 b/d of capacity this year, taking the field’s total to 185,000 b/d, some 35,000 b/d short of target.

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) already revised down the target from 320,000 b/d at the start of the current Iranian year (MEES, 13 May 2022). South Azadegan and its sister 75,000 b/d North Azadegan field are central to Iran’s efforts to increase oil production in the West Karun cluster (see map) which also includes North & South Yaran and Yadavaran.
