Egypt’s seven refineries raised their collective throughputs to a record 625,000 b/d for the recently-completed 2021-22 financial year (to 30 June), up 11% year-on-year and more than 20,000 b/d higher than the previous record set in 2019-20 prior to 2020-21’s covid-induced dip (see chart 1).

Products imports have halved since the late-2019 startup of Cairo’s ERC hydrocracker. Planned additions at Midor and Assiut could end these imports for good, but these projects might not be online until 2024.
