Iraq’s Rumaila Operating Organization successfully installed a three-stage water separation unit at Quraynat, South Rumaila. According to an Iraqi Oil Ministry video published on 21 August, the 100,000 b/d “temporary unit” will help increase oil recovery by “re-injecting [produced] water into the Dammam formation.” The facility will be “ready by 2023.” Iraq’s maturing oil fields require water to maintain production through Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). Iraq currently has around 3mn b/d of water injection capacity scattered throughout the south with at least 1.8mn b/d of it in South Rumaila (MEES, 18 June 2021).
