Iraq’s ministry of electricity has accelerated the pace of projects aimed at tackling the upcoming summer peak demand season. A 5 May press release announced the commissioning of a double-circuit 400kV transmission line between the 1.46GW Rumaila and 530MW Khor al-Zubair gas-fired power plants. The 70km line will help supply up to 2GW of power from the gas plants to the national grid, helping to stabilize power provision.

Ziad Fadhel, CEO of State Company for Southern Electricity Transmission, a ministry subsidiary, said the line was complex to build as it threaded through existing 132kV lines, residential areas and oil fields in Basra. (CONTINUED - 102 WORDS)
